Butano State Park, located in the Santa Cruz Mountains between Half Moon Bay and Santa Cruz, is a 4,000 acre park featuring second- and third-growth coastal redwood trees. After nearly a century of logging the old growth redwoods, various organizations were able to get this park added to the California State Park system to allow visitors to observe a healing forest and diverse ecosystem beautifully thriving under the influence of the coastal climate. The park offers over 40 miles of hiking, biking, and horseback riding along the canyons and uplands, camping at Ben Ries Campground, backpacking with backcountry camping (by permit only), picnicking in one of 7 picnic areas, or simply exploring the amazing redwood forest.
Butano State Park is border along Gazos Creek to the south by Año Nuevo State Park, and offers a connecting trail to Big Basin Redwoods State Park via Gazos Creek Road, a partially paved and partially dirt fire road.
