What started as an eight-room farmhouse in San Jose, California purchased by Sarah Winchester, an heiress to a large portion of the Winchester Repeating Arms fortune, turned into a massive 24,000 square foot mansion over the course of almost continuous construction and renovation from 1886 to her death in 1922. Even before her death, many people started to wonder about the mysteries surrounding this house, including why it was continuously renovated, who instructed her to built the house, why there are stairs leading to nowhere, and more. When you’re in San Jose make sure you stop by and take a tour to discover the mysteries for yourself.
