Located near the summit of Black Mountain in Monte Bello Open Space Preserve, Black Mountain Backpack Camp offers primitive hike or bike in camping close to the midpeninsula cities below. For backpackers, this camp typically serves as a first stop on a trip to the Pacific Ocean as trails from Monte Bello Open Space Preserve connect with a wide network of trails in the Santa Cruz Mountains through other Open Space Preserves, California State Parks, and San Mateo County Parks. The campground offers 4 individual sites and 1 group site, each accommodating 4 people and 24 people respectively, and provides campers with a restroom, non-potable water for washing purposes, and a pay phone for emergencies. Since no potable water is available, campers must pack in their own water of filter from an available water source. Reservation as required and can be made online at the Monte Bello Open Space Preserve website.
