This self-guided tour gives you a chance to explore a part of the beginning of the world's first national park. Yellowstone's first superintendents struggled with poaching, vandalism, squatting and other problems, so in 1886, US Army soldiers marched into Mammoth Hot Springs at the request of the Secretary of the Interior and took charge of Yellowstone National Park. Soldiers oversaw the construction of Fort Yellowstone. The sturdy red-roofed buildings are still in use today as the Albright Visitor Center, offices, and employee housing.
